It was a great opportunity to be in México for Christmas and New Years to get to know some of the women that we work with. Here is a shot of Prema talking to a mother/daughter team from Santo Tomás, Oaxaca. We fell in love with this weaving technique, and brought back several different sized bags that Maria (the mother) is already making in very contemporary designs. Its amazing how these Zapotec women from a small village in Oaxaca can have a sense of urban style -- but they get it!

hopping to check out the ruins of Toniná, Chiapas. The amazing thing about Chiapas is that some of the Mayan rituals practiced at the very ruins she visited are still alive and well in Chiapas.

We were amazed, yet again, at how much Oaxaca and Chiapas have to offer.

• About two miles, cross Bloomfield Avenue (major street), which changes to Elm Street
• Second right onto Hawthorne Place
• Two blocks to South Fullerton (the synagogue is on the corner).

Public Transport:

• from Penn Station: Take the Monctlair/Boonton Line to Walnut St.
• walk down Walnut Street toward Grove street (from the station, you will be able to see a busy street, this is Grove)
• turn right onto Grove street, which will become Elm Street
  
• after about 1/2 a mile, tuwn right onto Hawthorne Place
• South Fullerton will be on the left in about 2 blocks

With the cool weather also come the holidays. Our next two events are geared toward holiday shopping. Remember that after family and friends, it's important to treat yourself to a little something!

Or may we suggest these handy cases. The ones on the left are from Oaxaca, and the print on the right is from San Andres, Chiapas. We had initially envisioned them as eyeglass cases, but I've seen people using them as their full wallet.

Our Fall and Winter Line

We hope you can all make it to the Waldorf School's Fall fair in Garden City tomorrow, Saturday the 24th. Here's a sneak preview of what we will be selling tomorrow, and what we will have to offer to prepare you for the upcoming winter:

ModaTierra's line brings a Mexican hint to contemporary fashion. These embroidered cotton ponchos work well with jeans and boots, and are great for either the office or the bar. The design is pure Chiapas, but is similar to some Guatemalan embroidery due to their geographical proximity. When we found them in San Juan Chamula, we were thrilled at how modern the floral designs were.




To the right is one of the most versatile scarves we offer. We call it the "Carolina scarf" because our good friend in Mexico City has about 50 of them and wears a different color each day, sometimes in her hair, sometime around the neck as we're showing here and sometimes as a belt. They are hand woven in Oaxaca, and the softest ones we could find were in Mitla, just down the road from one of Mexico's most beautiful pre-Colombian ruins.


We sell the Carolina scarf in a larger size and in various colors. Please let us know if you are looking for a particular color.

Also perfect for the fall are these two types of decorative scarves.









The warmest scarves we have actually go by a different name in Spanish: the word rebozo is used for a scarf of this thickness, which I basically live in during the winter. The weave is much thicker, and the wool blend provides tons of warmth without being itchy.

Waldorf School Fall Fair October 24th 10 - 5pm

Hello Everyone!

We were quite successful with our last fair on Columbus Avenue and we are gearing up for our next event on October 24th from 10am to 5pm at the Waldorf School of Garden City. We are looking forward to connecting with people from the Waldorf community and inform them of our exciting work with indigenous Mexican women groups.

Traveling East
Take the Northern State Parkway to exit 26 south (New Hyde Park Rd.) At the first traffic light, turn right onto New Hyde Park Rd.; continue south on New Hyde Park Rd.; make a left onto Jericho Turnpike; then turn right onto Nassau Blvd.; turn left onto Cambridge Ave. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.

Traveling West
Take the Northern State Parkway to exit 31 south (Glen Cove Rd.). Continue south on Glen Cove Rd. Turn right onto Jericho Turnpike; turn left onto Nassau Blvd.; turn left onto Cambridge Avenue. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.

Via the Southern State Parkway
Take the Southern State Parkway to exit 17 north (Hempstead Ave.). Continue on Hempstead Avenue traveling north. Turn left at the second light (Nassau Blvd.) Continue north to the eighth traffic light. Turn right onto Cambridge Avenue. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.

Via Jericho Turnpike
Turn onto Nassau Blvd. traveling south (left turn if coming from the east, right if coming from the west). Pass under the railroad tressel. Continue on Nassau Blvd. making a left turn onto Cambridge Avenue. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.

Via Hempstead Turnpike
Turn onto Nassau Blvd. traveling north (right turn if coming from the east; left turn if coming from the west). Make a right onto Cambridge Avenue. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.

Via the Long Island Rail Road
Take the Hempstead line from Penn Station in Manhattan, the Flatbush Avenue Station in Brooklyn or the Jamaica Station in Queens to the Nassau Boulevard Station. The school is a short walk east on South Avenue; south on Brompton Road and east on Cambridge Avenue. The Waldorf School of Garden City is on the left.
